  • Hundreds Attend Fifth Annual Parent University
Hundreds of parents from throughout the Washington Elementary School District attended the fifth annual Parent University January 24 at Cholla Middle School.

Parent University is a special half-day educational opportunity designed to help parents and guardians assist their children with academics and behavior as well as provide important health and human service information and support. The first Parent University was held in January 2011.

After enjoying a free continental breakfast, parents attended an informational keynote address from Maria Paredes, senior program associate for school and district improvement at WestEd, entitled “Optimizing Student Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom.” She talked about the differences between parent involvement and parent engagement and gave parents tips about how to engage with schools to ensure academic success. Following the welcome and keynote, parents were off to attend informative sessions in three categories: Student Safety, Academic Success and and Family Education. Classes included a range of topics from bullying prevention and substance abuse to math games and couponing.

Throughout the morning, guests had the opportunity to visit the Community Resource tables where numerous organizations provided information helpful to parents and families in the community. Additionally, they could also participate in the Poster Gallery Walk which explained the key benchmarks by grade level in the areas of reading, math and writing. The day concluded with a free hot dog lunch provided by the North Phoenix and Sunnyslope Kiwanis and a raffle of prizes.

Special thanks to all of the presenters, community members, volunteers and staff members who worked so hard to make the event a successful one!

  • Early Release Wednesdays
The Washington Elementary School District provides Early Release Wednesdays so that teachers can work together in teams to ensure the best possible instruction for your child. Research supports that professional learning communities that support teacher growth also reflect best practices for students and high student achievement. Every Wednesday, unless otherwise announced, our students will be released one-and-a-half hours early, so please be sure that arrangements are made to have your child cared for on our early release Wednesdays.
